There are a lot of changes happening in the Jacksonville Jaguars organization. What started years ago to build a defensive football team that could still attack in a variety of ways is now looking to be a bit of a rebuilding project for coach Doug Marrone. Many notable players have departed including Dante Fowler, A. J. Bouye, Calais Campbell, and Leonard Fournette. Even Tom Coughlin is gone after a disappointing 6-10 finish at the bottom of the AFC South.
But there is also a lot to be excited about.
Gardner Minshew has shown signs that he can be a bright spot at quarterback should he continue to develop this year, their backfield is filled with a mix of talents, and a solid draft is bringing in explosive talents such as C.J. Henderson and K’Lavon Chaisson.
Despite worries stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, it looks as if the NFL will go on even if it doesn’t go as planned. The league will have to continue to adjust and evolve as it balances producing quality on the field and keeping players healthy. Still, with sports beginning to trickle back into our lives, it is a welcomed sight to see that football is almost here. Take a look at some of the most exciting storylines to follow all season long ahead of the Jaguars’ kick off their season hosting division rivals the Indianapolis Colts on September 13th at 12 PM on CBS.
COVID-19 is Going to Make an Impact
It would be impossible to accurately look at the state of the NFL without addressing the most obvious, COVID-19 is going to play a role in how the game is played this year. Beyond delays and cancelations, the league will also have to deal with players opting out of the season as we have already seen happen. The ramifications so far are untold but at the end of the day, a league that hates outside distractions will have one yelling in its ear all season long.
There were times where Gardner Minshew looked like he was going to continue shocking the world and give the Jaguars a true franchise quarterback. And then there were times where he looked like a true rookie, lost and confused. If there was anything we learned it’s that Minshew has talent and grit but will need to continue growing in his decision making and how he protects the ball, specifically, when it comes to fumbles. With an iconic mustache and a heart for the game, how can you not root for this guy to show up and give his all any given Sunday?
Who Will Rise Up on Defense?
Fresh additions to the defense and younger players getting their time to shine now that the veterans have moved on will have its say on how far the Jacksonville Jaguars are capable of going this season. This is a team that has put considerable focus into its defense over the last few years and will look to see an improved product on the field. Even veteran players such as Myles Jack will have to improve their skill and leadership if the Jags are to reach the postseason.
How Will Jay Gruden’s Offense Translate on the Field?
The faces on defense aren’t the only thing that will look different this year for the Jags. Jay Gruden is in town and with him comes a new playbook and offensive scheme. Coordinating how this core of quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, and linemen will be able to understand and execute the game plan would be a challenge during any season; however, with a season that has limited preseason activities and eliminated preseason games completely, the Jaguars are facing an uphill battle.
Life Without Leonard Fournette
And every-down back that was responsible for just under 31% of the team’s scrimmage yards last season. That’s who Fournette was, but after an eye-popping release, the Jaguars are moving on. Where Fournette goes will be interesting to football fans across the country but Jacksonville fans will be looking to see how this committee of backs is able to translate their talents into results with some big shoes to fill. Only three seasons removed from being the fourth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, the New Orleans native’s time in Jacksonville has come to a close. Where does he go and more importantly what will the Jaguars do now that he is gone?
