DISH Wireless to Receive Cloud-Native Billing Thanks to Amdocs’ Optima Platform

Another exciting partnership is coming from DISH Wireless with the announcement that Amdocs will be coming along for the ride as DISH works to become the fourth major wireless provider in America. Not only is DISH Wireless becoming a major wireless company, but the leader in satellite television is creating an innovative nationwide cloud-native standalone (SA) 5G network, the first of its kind. Optima is a billing platform that is cloud-native from Amdocs and will be used to assist in creating such a comprehensive network and bill for the multiple 5G services DISH Wireless is looking to offer its customers in the enterprise and wholesale sectors.

Using Optima works great with DISH Wireless and its ambitions as the billing platform is a containerized, flexible, and scalable one due in part to its cloud-native nature. All of these things are important for working with DISH Wireless as they are features users can expect to see in their upcoming 5G network. “Amdocs Optima is a cloud-based platform that has the flexibility to support our 5G needs and can scale to support enterprise and wholesale customers,” said Atilla Tinic, DISH’s CIO. “This containerized component within our greater 5G billing architecture will offer us multi-cloud, public or private, deployment flexibility. We’re excited about Optima’s cloud-native roadmap and we look forward to seeing it continue to evolve and align to our business.”

It’s no secret that part of the large ambitions DISH Wireless has regarding its endeavor into the 5G space involves fixed wireless and creating privatized networks through network slicing. This will allow DISH Wireless to provide customized network solutions all powered by 5G to entities throughout the United States including those in hard-to-reach markets that may otherwise go without. Priding itself as a market disruptor, DISH Wireless still plans to provide consumers with a wireless carrier that delivers an innovative network all while supporting its exciting customer base from the purchase of Boost Mobile, but the picture isn’t complete without considering the many industries DISH Wireless is looking to enter on its enterprise and wholesale side. Thanks to its dynamic pricing model as well as Optima, the logistics of bringing these aspects of its network to life becomes a lot easier for DISH Wireless.

Anthony Goonetilleke, the Group President of Media, Network and Technology for Amdocs spoke on the matter saying, “DISH is a true visionary in its 5G rollout plans and we are delighted to help enable them to leverage our cloud-based billing platform. We are excited to extend this partnership while enabling DISH to deliver innovative 5G use cases and experiences with our Optima platform.”

The cloud-native aspect of Optima is going to work seamlessly with the 5G network DISH is creating. This will provide scalability which allows solutions to be created easier, faster, cheaper, and helps create an environment for collaboration which will help benefit vendors. A major challenge for DISH Wireless is to develop such a network without having as much infrastructure or existing spectrum in the 4G LTE realm as other major wireless companies. Though this obstacle is a bit of a blessing in disguise as 4G LTE prevents users from receiving the true power of 5G in terms of speed and reduced latency. The SA nature of the cloud-native 5G network will bring new heights to what consumers can expect from 5G networks.

Though lacking in infrastructure, there are deals DISH Wireless has struck to remedy the situation as well as taking the approach of a greenfield design to help mitigate costs and deploy more for less. DISH Wireless is working with a deadline of covering 75% of Americans by the summer of 2025 or the FCC will present them with a multi-billion dollar fine. 4G LTE is also not as much of an option for DISH Wireless as it is for other major wireless carriers because while DISH has plenty of spectrum at its disposal, it is spectrum for 5G rather than previous generations. Acquiring Boost Mobile was a major step for the company and it will continue to look forward to building this brand, servicing customers, and providing a new network for consumers, however, with partnerships such as this between DISH and Amdocs, it is impossible to ignore that there is much more going on than providing cell phone services to everyday Americans and that is something to be excited about.
