How Will The NBA Restart Work?

A basketball hoop in an NBA stadium.

Dining out, family gatherings, vacations, weddings, and any other fun event has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic and for months this has included sports. Finally, we are seeing sports slowly but surely come back into our lives and onto our televisions giving us a little less cabin fever and a lot more to be excited about. The NBA is back and here is everything you need to know about catching all the action!

Important NBA Dates

As we get restarted it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement that hoops are back but it’s important to remember that for basketball fans everywhere, there’s more than just regular-season games coming back. We’re talking the Lottery, the Draft, and of course, the NBA Playoffs. If “ball is life” is your motto, get ready to mark your calendar as we welcome back the best that basketball has to offer over the next few months:

  • Tip-off with two wonderful matchups between the Jazz and the Pelicans with a battle to see who runs L.A. to follow on July 30th.
  • See who gets the highly sought after top pick in this year’s draft during the NBA Draft Lottery on August 25th.
  • October 13th is Game 7 of the NBA Finals if necessary.
  • Two days later, on October 15th, we will meet the new faces of the league at the NBA Draft.
  • Will A.D stay in L.A.? Can pretenders move to contenders with the right signing? Find out starting October 18th as free agency gets started.
  • The 2020-21 NBA Season gets started just in time for the holidays. December 1st your favorite teams tip-off to battle for the ultimate prize all over again.

Who’s Playing? 22 Teams Will Battle it Out

The bad news is not everyone is coming back when the NBA starts again but the top 22 teams that will battle on the court have made their way to Orlando, Florida and are ready to earn a place in the Playoffs. Get to know the squads hitting the hardwood late this Summer:

The Eastern Conference:

  • Boston Celtics
  • Brooklyn Nets
  • Indiana Pacers
  • Miami Heat
  • Milwaukee Bucks
  • Orlando Magic
  • Philadelphia 76ers
  • Toronto Raptors
  • Washington Wizards

The Western Conference:

  • Dallas Mavericks
  • Denver Nuggets
  • Houston Rockets
  • Los Angeles Clippers
  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • Memphis Grizzlies
  • New Orleans Pelicans
  • Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Portland Trail Blazers
  • Sacramento Kings
  • San Antonio Spurs
  • Utah Jazz

Each team will play a total of 8 seeding games that will play a part in determining who qualifies for the Playoffs and where that team will be seeded for the postseason.

Seeding Games and The Playoffs

The seeding games are based on the games that were left on each team’s schedule. The top 7 teams of each conference, which will also take into consideration the regular season record of each team before the delay, will go to the Playoffs. The final slot could be determined with a play-in tournament on August 15-16. There are a few matchups that are TBD to create a situation in which each team has played around the same amount of total games. The Mavericks are positioned to play the most with 75 games played as San Antonio will have played the fewest at 71 games.

How to Watch the Games

Orlando, Florida is where all the action is as ESPN’s World Wide World of Sports Complex will be the center of the remainder of the NBA Season and Postseason. Unfortunately, fans will not be allowed in any of the games and no tickets will be administered to the public, but just because you can’t be there in person doesn’t mean you have to miss any of the on-court excitement. GoDISH has packages and bundles that put you right in the middle of the hottest matchups. See how the season ends on channels such as ABC, ESPN, NBATV, and TNT with professional coverage, highlights, and insight. Learn more about the NBA on DISH Network or get started today and see how GoDISH can help you catch every basket this season and beyond.
