Which Teams are Playing in the MLS Is Back Tournament?
24 of the 26 MLS teams are participating in the MLS Is Back Tournament this Summer. The bad news is that FC Dallas and Nashville SC were forced to withdraw due to complications involving the coronavirus pandemic; however, the good news is with the remainder of the league tucked safely within the MLS bubble, the rest of the league is taking every protocol necessary to keep the Beautiful Game moving forward with exciting matches already underway.
Where Will the MLS Is Back Tournament Be Held?
The MLS Is Back Tournament will take place in Orlando, Florida at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Like the NBA, MLS has decided to take things to Florida and create a bubble atmosphere to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19 and keep the games going. No fans will be allowed into any of the games this year but DISH Network has you covered for all of the action.
What is the MLS Is Back Tournament Format?
If you are familiar with the World Cup or the UEFA Champions League, you’ll feel right at home with the MLS Is Back Tournament. Both the Eastern and Western Conferences have been split into 3 groups with the Eastern Conference represented in Groups A, C, and E and the Western Conference split into Groups B, D, and F. Within each group teams will play a round-robin to decide rankings. The top three teams from Group A and the top two teams from each of the other Groups will advance to the next round. Additionally, the next three highest-ranked teams from the Groups will also advance. The tiebreakers are as follows and in order of importance: points, goal differential, goals scored, and fewest disciplinary actions. Once things are decided, the Round of 16 will begin and move into a normal knockout tournament format until a champion is crowned. There is no third-place game. The MLS Is Back Tournament has started but there is still plenty of action and intrigue left to be unveiled. Take a look at some of the most important dates you’ll want to follow this season:
- July 8th got things started as the Group Stage began for the MLS Is Back tournament.
- The Round of 16 takes place July 25-28.
- Things heat up in the Quarterfinals July 30-August 1st.
- Only four teams left, the Semifinals take place on August 5th and 6th.
- Two teams enter but only one can be crowned champion, the Finals will be held August 11th.
